Today marks my 1000th post, more if you count some of the drivel I edited out when I moved this blog over from Typepad years ago. I had all kinds of ideas about how to mark this 1000th post, but none of them were exceptionally good, and to be honest all I really want to say is Thank You. I’ve said that a lot lately; I’ve got a great deal to be grateful for, and your kindness, support, comments and readership mean the world to me. This blog has put me in touch with a huge community of amazing people and in turn that community has allowed me to keep building this thing, one post, one eBook, one printed book, at a time.  I’ve met so many of you, emailed others, and I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I feel like the luckiest man in the world. Thank you.

Speaking of luck, it doesn’t always hold. 10 weeks ago I fell off that wall in Italy. 10 weeks! Here’s a quick update. I’m now almost 9 weeks post-op after the surgeries to fix my feet. My cracked pelvis is now healed. Every day I’m a step (metaphorically mostly) closer to recovering. Two weeks ago my surgeon cleared me to begin putting weight on my left foot (50%) and in two weeks I can put 100% on that foot and begin putting some weight (25%) on the right.

June 22, 2011, First day on crutches.
Smiling on the outside, scared of falling down on the inside. 🙂

Learning to walk again is a terrifying thing, but each day brings a little more confidence and a little less pain. I’m scheduled to be in rehab as an in-patient for much of August, and by the time I get on a plane to Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand in September it’ll be 4+ months, and I’ll likely be traveling light (think Fuji x100, small tripod and an iPad), possibly with a cane.

Somewhere in there I’ve got to get back to Atlanta. I almost feel I left my heart there. Jessie is still there and if there’s one thing that’s been hard about all this it’s knowing that my plans have gone completely sideways. That part’s OK; an adventure that goes to plan isn’t an adventure, it’s just a plan. But the two months I had on the road were among the happiest I’ve ever been. Not easy, but amazing, waking every day to a feeling of “this is what I was created to do.” I miss that adventure and while Jessie sits waiting I’m scheming and filling my poor mother’s home with the expedition gear that will prolong this adventure through 2012 once I’m back in the saddle. Anyways, as this whole thing went in a different direction than planned I’ve decided to spend most of 2012 in the American West, but I’ll take some time getting there this time. And if I can do a whole year without falling off a wall, I’ll spend 2013 in Europe with Jessie or her cousin. But you know me and plans these days, so….

Jessie and I on the first day of our adventure, in Tofino, B.C., back when I could walk and stuff. 🙂 Can’t tell you how excited I was. Jessie’s parked in Atlanta, and overstaying her welcome, with a friend right now. Sit tight, lass, I’m coming!

Through this I’ve been stunned by your support and kindness, so again, thank you. I am so luck to be alive, so grateful to have avoided paralysis. This whole journey has given me all kinds of unexpected gifts, new friends, profound lessons, time with family, and a deeper appreciation for the grace to live life moment by beautiful moment. I never in a million years imagined that starting this blog would give me what it has. I wanted readers; what I got was colleagues, friends, the odd stalker, and a handful of people that feel suspiciously like family. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Raising my glass to you and hoping you’ll join me for the next 1000.

Thanks again to all of you for the amazing support, kind words, pep talks, and all-around lovin’! I love the adventure I’m on and every reader on this blog is part of that. I’m so grateful. Thank you.
    🙂

  2. You’ve worked hard to maintain this blog and, as is apparent, it is much appreciated by us all. You’ve worked hard to transform your life and it too has been successful and rewarding for us all to learn from. You’ve worked hard to learn your craft and you have done so superlatively and we all benefit from sharing your imagination and view of this beautiful world me live in. I thank you for being such an inspirational photographer, teacher and human being. Best wishes for a continued and accelerated recovery, and many, many thanks for things you will never know.

  3. I confess I will always kick myself that I did not go to the gathering at Zack’s when you were here in Atlanta. I wanted to badly but chickened out at the last minute because I did not feel worthy. In hindsight I now know what a huge mistake that was.

Call me selfish, but I hope there will be another gathering when you come to pick up Jesse. I will definitely be there, with bells on. No really, is I have to wear bells, I will. Everything goes better with more cowbell.

In 1999, due to an incident in the US Navy, I ended up spending 13 months in a Navy hospital recovering before I was finally granted my medical discharge. Wheelchairs doth sucketh and the rehab evil. It has taken me more than a decade before I felt like I was ready to pick up a camera again, You and Zach have been incredible inspirations for me, and I do want you to know that it does get better. It may take time, but you will get back to you again, an improved and more sage version.

I know how tough it can be, emotionally and physically. Many blessings on your recovery.

    ~ Marlies

  4. In the background of the picture of you and Jessie, I recognized the government wharf in Tofino. I just spent a week taking photos in Pacific Rim National Park and eating delicious salmon burgers. What a magical place. I hope you are continuing to recover from your fall.

  5. Oh, forgot to add that your post about your conversation in Louisiana really made me laugh. I’ve had similar experiences there – it’s a great place to visit, so different from the Pacific Northwest.

  6. Congratulation David on your 1,000 post and such a successful blog. Someday I hope that my own blog can be as successful (though sometimes I think I may dread that day as well).

Though I have been reading your books since the first one was published (haven’t tried the e-books yet) and have been aware of you since joining TPN when Jim first started it up, I didn’t start following your blog until after your accident (BTW, very glad your healing, albeit slowly). So this this post, I was interested in your trip with Jessie. Consequently, I spent some time today reading your past posts about your trip circumnavigating the states. I hope to do something similar myself some day, so am quite interested in your adventure. Hope you get back to it as soon as possible.

As you mention several times in your various posts, you were traveling fast, without a lot of time to explore (photographically and otherwise) many interesting places you went through. It does seem shameful not to be able to spend more time places and truly explore. Though I feel this way, I’m guilty of it as well. Right now, for example, I am planning a trip from Tacoma (my home) down through the 4-corners area to Santa Fe in late September. I wanted to take 3 weeks, spending a lot of time in Utah and New Mexico, but my wife and traveling partner put a 2 week limit on it. Now, if I stick to my current plan, I’ll fly through places I’d rather explore for a few days. Life is full of compromises my friend – you had your obligations, I need to keep my domestic harmony.

Anyway, this has turned way too much into a rambling letter rather than a brief congratulatory comment. Congrats again, and heal swiftly!

  7. David,
Wishing you well. I broke my right ankle and knee skiing a few years back and coudnt put weight on it for months etc etc. Its long road back, bu worth the trip!
    Keep your spirits up

  8. Dude, there’s a room for you for as long as you like in Germany, in 2013. Constant piss taking from me thrown in for free.

Hmm, actually, we have a wall with a drop. It’s fine for my 3 year old but, erm, ok, I tell you what, let me know when you’re here and we’ll put a fence in … ok?

  9. Happy Blogday! I think I read about the last 150 posts only, but pls keep them coming.

    thank you, and healthy recovering.

  10. Congratulations on your Blog milestone!!
Really hope you are feeling better soon. Thank you for taking the time to write amazing books, for all the inspiration, thoughts and for never ceasing to share your wisdom with the photographic community.
    Namaste.

  11. Congratulations on the 1000th! …. and thank you for all you share with your postings. Glad to hear things are going well with your recovery and plans for the year ahead. Karen

  12. I knew you’d get back on your feet sooner or later… after all, we fall down so that we can learn to get back up again!

Congratulations on your recover so far — it will be great to read about your further adventures when you’re back on the road!

  13. go on to roam the world
    make more pictures
    write more blog
    spread the vision
i am looking forward to the next 1000 posts
and for heavens sake watch where your treading 🙂

  14. I’m happy to see you upright again! Don’t want to make light of all the re-hab to come, but you’ll be back on the road before you know it.

I appreciate the life and vision in your
images and enjoy reading your books, as well as this blog, so it’s great to see you on the mend.

Keep on truckin’ with a smile and when necessary, a grimace!

  15. It’s great to hear you’re recovering fine and will soon be flying the skies :-).
I have been a devoted reader for almost two years since I first discovered “Inside the Frame” in the French magazine “PHOTO”. I read it, loved it and it became a permanent resident on my bedside table :-).
I greatly admire your photographs, your writings and your philosophy.
Cheers to 1000th! Here’s to many more!!!

Rob – Would be my honour to let you make a portrait. Keep an eye on my trajectory, and if we get close, holler!

  17. I would be privileged to be considered one of your “Odd Stalkers”!

    I hope an E-P2 accompanies the X-100. ;).

As many who know you through the books, blog, and ebooks, I hope to bump into you in the West next year.

You are on my portrait “bucket list”.

  18. Hi,
I stumbled upon you’re blog while researching the x100.

Funny thing, my x100 has already been ordered. And both our x100s might meet each other somewhere in Asia, as I’ll go to Cambodia, Thailand, Laos in November for 3-5 Months… 😉

  19. this is one of my favorite posts of yours well written posts at least. I haven’t followed your blog from the beginning but for a while now and enjoy it. thank you for sharing your experiences with us and continuing to do so. if you ever get up to eastern washington or need some ideas on places to go just let me know.

  20. So glad you are well on the road to recovery.

Also glad to have found you, here. Haven’t been part of all the first thousand but will surely be here for the next.

Cheering you on from the sidelines…

  21. oops, i meant to say, “the opportunity to meet you in person some time!”. In the meantime, I will remain a virtual student and colleague. cheers.

  22. Keep your spirits up and your healing moving forward – hope I’ll get to meet you in Ireland in 2013 David!

  23. Congratulations to your 1000th post!!! I’ll be looking forward to the next 1000 🙂 . So glad you are feeling better!

  24. David: thank you for inviting all of us –me included! — to the party. I liked to year that “I’ve decided to spend most of 2012 in the American West” since that may open up the opportunity. cheers

  25. Congratulations! I managed to hit 1000 posts on the same day as my 25th anniversary, so that was pretty cool. I’m praying you’ll have more mobility, less pain, and happy trails ahead for you and Jesse. Waving from Atlanta!

  26. Here’s to hoping there will be 1000 more! Your writing has helped me with many aspects of my own life – not just photography. I’d love nothing more then if one day I could meet you. If you are ever in the okanagan area drop me a line. Best of luck recovering, and thank you for being a constant inspiration!

  27. Cheers matey! All I can say is thanks back, you’ve been a source of inspiration, and I love reading your stuff (both blogs and books). Keep it coming 🙂

  28. Congratulations David. You have been a huge inspiration to me. Hope at some point you will make it back to Vancouver. It is beautiful and waiting!

  29. Congratulations and well wishes. Looking forward to the next 1000!!

  30. Congratulations David. I am very looking forward to the next 1000. Glad to see you are doing well and slowly healing up. Good luck with the rehab next month.

  31. Thank you and congratulations on 1000 posts!
Now that I see Jessie again all shiny I wonder what happened to her gopro cams. Will we see something of that?

  32. Congrats on the milestone post and here’s to the next 1000! Thank you, David, for all you have shared with us, for the honesty in which you’ve share it, and all the inspiration along the way.

Continued best wishes for a full and complete (and speedy) recovery.

  33. Well, it’s all been said above but not, I think (maybe), from Hong Kong. Never mind, either way, a big ‘well done’ on the 1K and an even bigger ‘well done’ on the recovery process – I expect getting up on those crutches was likely the more important milestone.

  34. and here’s to you sir! you feel like a surrogate brother to me. here’s an aside: i can’t help but notice in the portrait photo of you on Jessie that you are squeezing your left hand with your right hand with intense pressure. that makes for an interesting tension in this photo, but i wonder what that’s all about? the southwest trip sounds promising, and here’s to mom’s for the love that they can provide. love ya man! have a good one. -Nate Parker Maine Photography.

  35. Whoa Dude! Look at you all up on those crutches! Lookin good!!!! So GROOVY!
Congratulations on getting up on the crutches as well as the 1000!

Maybe next year while you’re exploring the Wild Wild West, we’ll get to meet and shoot something together.
Hey, a girl can dream.. eh!

Seriously though, I’m so happy to see how well and quickly you’re recovering. Indeed Thankful you avoided paralysis.

Jessie will be fine as she waits patiently!
    Keep on keeping on!

    Ciao
    Deborah

  36. David
I must say I was disappointed when you buzzed through our “American West” so quickly. It really deserves more than that. There is so much to see, so much diversity, people have spent a lifetime exploring it.

I have been reading and enjoying your posts as well as your books for a couple of years. I am particularly attracted by your approach, relishing the image, not the gear.

I have been intrigued by a number of your workshops, particularly your Lumein Dei series, but at 81 it has to remain more of a dream than a reality. Maybe I will stumble over you in one of our great western parks this year! With the help of a little RV that is something that I can do.

Thank you for all the inspiration over the years.

  37. Yay! Both to the 1000th post and walking again (even though assisted).

  38. Congratulations David and your welcome. And of course THANK YOU for being who you are and persevering through this recovery time without abandoning your blog. You have not missed a beat in my opinion. Hopefully your time spent here on the blog is helping in all aspects of your recovery, seems like it is and we also benefit from that.

Looking forward to your next 1000 posts as I will read them all and hopefully meeting up in person some day.

  39. As a new reader I can only say I look forward to 1000 posts on and wish you well in your recovery!

  40. David, Congrats on reaching this major milestone that epitomizes your determination and success. I hope your recovery continues along the same path

  41. David – I am a new reader, joining the group when i read about your fall. I am grateful to be on this journey with you – you have been inspirational! Congratulations on 1000 and looking forward to what is next! Wishing you continued healing and happy shooting!

  42. Congratulations David on 1000! Thank you sincerely for your generosity. 🙂

    Greeting from Indonesia

  44. Congrats, David! Raising my glass to you! And definitely sticking around for the next 1000 🙂

  45. Felicitations on your 1000th. I’ve enjoyed them all. No better place to recuperate than in the Ottawa Valley. Having relocated to the Fraser Valley, I’m torn about having left behind all those wonderful people in Kanata. Get well soon. God is with you.

  46. Congrats on hitting 1000! The scotch is definitely on me. (No really… I had too much and it poured all over the place. I’ll sop it up and put it in a bottle for you.)

    Here’s to the next millennia!

  47. David,

Congradulations on 1000! Please know that myself and the rest of your fans are truly greatful for you and your blog. 48. Congratulations on 1000th blog posts and doing so well with your recovery! I loved this quote from your post, “an adventure that goes to plan isn’t an adventure, it’s just a plan.” I can’t wait to read about your upcoming adventures and good luck with your continued physical therapy.

  49. Thank you for sharing your adventures (and misadventures) with us!

  50. Hi David, congrats on your 1000th post. your work, your thoughts, your vision and your words have inspired me to think deeper whenever I hold my camera, to better express my vision and to create quality instead of quantity. THANK YOU!

I’m really glad I picked up the book WIthin the Frame which started it all, following your blog posts and your $5 ebooks has changed me.

Keep inspiring and I hope one day I will be able to inspire others like you. Get well soon!

  51. David, congrats on post #1000 and best wishes for the upcoming road to a full recovery. What you do for the photographic community is amazing – thank YOU! I’m glad to have met you in Seattle when we did and am looking forward to the next chance to meet up again. Cheers.

  52. Congratulations David, that is an amazing milestone and I have really enjoyed joining you in your journey. I’m so glad to hear you are healing up fast and its even better to be inspired by how you are keeping your spirits up through it all.

  53. Awesome David! We never know what life has in store for us and the best laid plans … well, can go to hell quite quickly! It’s how we deal with our setbacks and move on that makes us who we are.

Congrats on 1000, keep ’em coming and stay strong!

  54. Congratulations on your 1000th post! And thank YOU for sharing so much of your life, knowledge and experience with us. 58. Congratulations on your 1000th post. I truly enjoy reading your blog and look forward to next 1000 posts. Good to hear you will be spending some time in the American West. If you make it to Yosemite, please know that our house is always open. All the best for your continued speedy recovery!

  59. Dude! Well done on #1000 and on a life well-lived! I’m sure you’ll recover and I’m even more certain that the present circumstance will change in you ways you can’t yet imagine.

  65. David, Thanks for leading the way, in so many ways. Your experience (the good and bad:-)) and the way you communicate your experience, carry a powerful punch. A punch that gets my attention and helps make me a better person…..with every blog post. So selfishly I thank you.
So grateful to you for following your calling.
Will you be having a workshops in the mid west? I’m in if you are.

  75. The section about the expedition gear gave me the most pleasure. Continuing the dream despite the obstacles is strenghtening, not only for your readers but also for yourself. While the plans and hopes live, life is always an adventure!

Raising a glass to your continued recovery and the resumption of those plans!

(Now for some muscle building rehab to help you climb in and out of Jessie’s ‘bedroom’!)

  76. Congratulations on your 1000th post!! I am so amazed at your continued strength and courage and also so amazed at the progress you have made in your recovery. One step at a time . . . wishing you well, as always! 🙂

  77. Congrats on the 1000 and the recovery process so far. Certainly praying for you to be fit enough to really enjoy Laos and Cambodia (my two phototrips after LD09) – great food, great people, great photographic opportunities and really interesting micro-organisms. You have my permission to skip those, though.

  78. Remarkable post, remarkable writer, remarkable attitude, remarkable photographer, remarkable perspective on life.

Here’s the deal. You write another 1000, I’ll read them.

    Steve

PS I took your advice and signed up for MedJet (I’m on the road 50% of the time). Thanks for that, too.

  79. With heartfelt thanks for all the time you devote to us through your blog and books. You are a treasure and a gift to us. As if your images weren’t enough inspiration, you also share your perspective and educate. We are very grateful and appreciative. First time (commenter), long time (reader). Here’s to the first of many 1000 celebrations!

  80. Thank you for being such a positive and refreshing voice to hear amongst the din. Keep up the healing and when you feel inspired the posts…but mostly the healing. We’ll be here…

  81. David, I was elated to see you upright again! After what you have been through, walking nine weeks post-op is a HUGE accomplishment! So is 1000 posts! So congrats on it all! Continue in your speedy recovery and I look forward to many more blogs showing us your progress.

  82. I think this deserves a public thanks to you, David. Your blog has taught me about photography, artistry, and life. It has encouraged me and kicked my ass. Hard. If not for your blog, I wouldn’t have known about the workshop in Ladakh that changed my life in so many good ways.

Have to give a little shout out to the writing you did at your previous blog, Fearfully Human. Wonderful work there, David. I think it would still hold up well.

    Peace to you, friend.

  83. Congratulations on the Thousand (if you fancy a chuckle, get hold of Moby’s “song” of the same name :))! I haven’t read all 1000, but can honestly say that your blog is the one I scramble to open first when I see an update and easily has the highest good stuff/filler ratio on the internet (somewhere around the 1000:1 quotient I’m betting!).

Great to hear that the recovery keeps going strong and you can see past your current troubles to new plans and new adventures. I’m sure you’ll find them all the more joyous knowing how different things could have been.

All the best, and thanks again for such an honest and often uplifting blog!

  84. Congratulations, David, on 1000th post and more importantly, your continued recovery! Thank you for sharing, for being who you are and for letting us support you and all your madcap adventures 🙂 All the best, and should you someday do an East Coast US tour, you know our little B&B doors are open to you for as long as you’d like to stay. Cheers!

  85. I’ve never posted here, but I have 2 of your books and a bunch of the e-downloads. Followed recent events in amazement. Good luck with the recovery mate.

  86. Congratulations, David! I am so thankful to be able to read your 1000th post. We almost didn’t get that. Through your recovery, you have written some of the most heartfelt words and let me tell you, you have helped me battle through my stuff. So thank you and here’s to your next 1000.

  87. David – you’ve long been a photographic inspiration, and now your positive and upbeat attitude in face of grave injury is a human inspiration as well! I’ve been spending my US holiday weekend with Vision & Voice and A Deeper Frame – keep up the great work & best wishes for a full recovery.

  88. Hi David,

Another silent reader (well, not anymore now) here joining the celebrations. Congrats on the 1000th post, and please keep them coming. The amount of knowledge you share – and I’m not just talking photography – is invaluable, and your writing skills make it a pleasure to read every single time, even you consider you’re just rambling.
Please keep them coming, and if your EuroTour 2013 brings you to Portugal, the coffee is on me.

  89. Glad to have been a small part of the journey since the old blog days. Thank you for your presence, whatever shape it takes. Thinking of you, especially the the work it takes to get to the point of taking steps again. You’re doing it!

  90. Dear David,

I wish you all the best, you’re a fountain of new ideas and great source of inspirations, not only concerning photography but a life itself as well.

Best regards and keep it going!
    W.

  91. david, always inspiring, regardless of the challenges. thanks for sharing your journey. here’s to out of rehab!

  92. David, let me join everybody and congratulate you on your #1000 post and your successful ongoing recovery!
    ——————————————————————
Guys, lets reach 1000 comments to this post! What do you say?
    ————————————————————–

  93. I’m happy that your well on the way to recovery, I can relate to your pain to a lesser degree as a little more than a year ago I missed the bottom step of a ladder and took a tumble. Stretched my right arm out to “stop” my fall, and shattered the wrist. Wrists are not shock absorbers. That was the end of camera usage for a while as I couldn’t hold one. Eventually I mended, there are still some issues, always will be, but I just work around them. I’ve been reading your blog since about the time you had first mentioned your journey with Jessie and have thoroughly enjoyed it… heres to the next 1000 posts.

  94. David,

    Small changes…whatever it needs
