When we decided to host an intimate, intensive weekend conference in Vancouver this summer, I was blown away by what an incredible experience it was. We spent two days together, and we all left exhausted, inspired, and changed. In all there were 10 sessions, and once we cut them and edited them together we had just over 14 hours of video content for anyone that couldn’t come to an event like this. It was a small group of us, about 30 students, and myself, but now you can get in on the sessions that formed The Created Image Workshop in Vancouver this summer. Today we’re releasing The Created Image Video Series, Volume 01.

The Created Image, Volume 01 is 10 separate sessions:

  • The Inspired Eye 1 and 2, about the creative process and the foundations of what we do as photographers and creatives.
  • The Created Image 1 and 2, about visual design and composition, discussing things like balance, tension, scale, and all the other visual design tools we often ignore in favour of the so-called Rule of Thirds.
  • Photographically Speaking, a session about how we use the tools of visual design to express and communicate.
  • The Un-Suck Filter, a session about gimmick-free creation of stronger, more compelling images.
  • The Path to Pro 1 and 2, a tag team between my manager, best friend, and author of Living The Dream, Corwin Hiebert, and myself, about the realities of becoming, and being a working professional.

This is the next best thing to being there, which you can’t, because it’s over and while we’ll do another weekend next summer, the teachers and the curriculum will be completely different. But with both streaming and download options, all 14 hours of the content can be yours when, and where, you want it. (Note: Volume 01 is the whole set of 10. It’s so-named because we intend to do this next year, which’ll be Vol.02)

We asked our participants for honest feedback at the end, here’s what some of them said:

“I’ve taken 5 live photography education courses this year and…David is probably the best it could get in terms of learning. One of the best learning sessions I’ve attended in my career.” – Ranjit Vazhapilly

“David is an excellent instructor and his creativity focus is fantastic. By far one of the better photographic workshops.” – Paul Ausmann

“David opened my eyes to new ways of thinking and has sparked my desire to pursue my passion at another level. I’m already making better photographs! I would highly recommend the experience, regardless of your photography skills or training.” – Mark Parsons

“Very liberating! Very affirmative! Thank you, David.” – Gretchen Taylor

“This conference was exactly what I needed it to be—an inspirational kick in the ass. I left feeling motivated to hold myself to a higher artistic standard. Even better, I left with a set of practical tips, tools, and concepts that I can use in my efforts to elevate my work.” – Shanna Baker

If you’re looking to take your photography past the basics and you want to spend 14 hours with a teacher who’s passionate about making the best photographs of his life, and teaching others to reach for the same thing, this is the closest thing we’ve offered to a one-on-one in your own living room. Or bus seat. Or lunch room. It’s professionally shot in full HD, and the audio’s great. Most importantly, it’s an honest, passionate,  gimmick-free approach to this craft.

  1. Fabulous, glad you are doing this! I was sad that I couldn’t attend this in person. This is definitely the next best thing! Can’t wait to start watching. Thanks!

Glad we could do this, Nikki. There’s a ton of people that just can’t do a live event, but it’s great to know I can now overwhelm and confuse people in the comfort of their own homes. Let me know what you think. Thanks for your support. 🙂

      1. Well I’m easily overwhelmed and confused, so I’m an easy mark!

I was incredibly fortunate to see you in Bragg Creek earlier this year. I had just completed reconstructive surgery with numerous lung blood clots a couple weeks prior … but nothing was stopping me from going (although, damn it was cold!). I truly enjoyed your style of teaching, so informative and easy to listen to. I was especially moved when you spoke of losing your friend to cancer. It hit home.

I’m a huge fan and hope you continue to share your stories and teachings. And, hopefully, you’ll make another trip to Alberta in the future!

  2. I had the good fortune to be present at the Vancouver event. Every moment was useful and valuable. I made extensive notes, but still feel the video will be helpful. A recommended purchase.

  3. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have access to this series for such a small amount of money. So far the lessons have been invaluable and the next best thing to being there (plus I can watch over and over since my memory and note taking can be poor at times….). Very inspirational and I hope to apply this to my process. Thanks David and team!

  4. Just purchased and I’m looking forward to the great content. Having read your books and ebooks, it will be neat to have your “actual voice” now. 😉

Thanks SO much for the discount, too!

    Hope you are healing well~

Thanks Julie – Kind of you to say so. Let me know how you’re enjoying it. Hope it’s truly helpful to you. 🙂

  5. Awesome Stuff David. Have you ever been invited to CreativeLive? I think you would be a smash hit.

    1. Adam, thank you. Yes, I did one of the early CreativeLive weekends, probably about 3 years ago. The Vision Driven Photographer, or similar title.

  6. I just ordered this and am looking forward to viewing the content. But, is there any chance of getting the videos on DVD, even for an extra fee? (I’ve asked about this as well.) It going to take a long time dl’ing these 1-Gig videos over my slow DSL line.

    With anticipation … 😉

      1. As the crow flies, not too far. I’m on Orcas Island.

        The address is:

        Dave Kosiur
        P.O. Box 533
        Orcas, WA 98280

Many, many thanks for doing this.

  7. Thanks for making these available Dave! Are these in 1-2 hour files over 1GB in size?- and is VOL1 all 14 hours or just part of more to come?

    1. Tom – Most of the files are about 1GB, give or take. Some more. Volume 01 is all 14 hours, over 10 episodes. We plan to do Vol. 02 next year. Sorry we were a little less than clear on that.

  8. Thank you… Even if much of what you’re saying is obvious to me it really helps to hear it from someone else to get it to sink in… I really enjoy your work, and style of teaching – Good work!
    Greatings from Sweden!

  9. Hi David, as it is nearly impossible to attend your workshops in person (I’m located in Germany) the videos are really really fantastic and my best investment in 2013! 😉
I like the way you think about being a photographer and that it’s not the gear which makes the difference – it’s the passion taking or better said – making photos!
I’m hope there will be more volumes to come! I will spread the word about this fantastic video lessons.

    Cheers from Germany, Tom

  10. Loved the Video series, watched them over and over. But was only able to get them through streaming so I also would be willing to purchase a dvd copy as well so I can load them for times when streaming is not possible

Hi Kevin – Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the comments and encouragement. The download does take a while. Not sure if we’re set up yet to send out DVDs or a USB drive, but it can’t hurt to send an email to and see if they can help you out with this.

  11. Hi David ,

Having seen your YouTube podcast and read your book “within the frame” I was really keen to see you in action ,talking about how you take your photographs, the planning the processing and the reading/interpreting of your images.

I recently bought “the-created-image-video-series-vol-1” and sure I posted the links to all my accounts ( Facebook , Gplus and others mediums)

Most of my friends know me to be a person who rarely recommends or promotes product or brands. But your work David, I am proud to promote and I will shamelessly sneek in your name in my photography related conversations and recommend your work only because you have been such a great inspiration and refined my vision .

One last thing . I love the Intro and ending music piece . Would you be so kind and give me some information so I can look up the artist

    Many thanks

Hi Ron – Thanks so much for this. I’m honoured that you’d recommend my work to others, that’s always the highest praise. Thank you.

The music is from Pond5, a stock music site. I wish I had the particular piece’s name, but if you look for acoustic tracks you’ll find this one and hundreds of others. It’s a great resource for things like this.

Thanks again for your support, Ron. Means the world to me.

  12. I took one of your courses a long time ago in Temple TX. I became a follower of you and your work immediately.. I just watched the first video and the message is as powerful and incredibly meaningful. Great job I’m looking forward to my next video.

Hi Mike – I remember you. That weekend in Texas (around Temple, wasn’t it?) is a fond memory for me. Thanks for the comments and touching base again. Thrilled to hear the videos connect with you.
