Postcard from Death Valley

Racetrack Play, Death Valley.

Just a quick hello from Las Vegas en route to Valley of Fire State Park. We spent a couple great days in Death Valley at the Racetrack Playa, which I’ve wanted to see for as long as I’ve known about the moving rocks. So much fun. Stayed late last night until the sun was well on its way west and the temperatures dropped enough to make all my layers just one too few, and played with my tilt-shift lens and Singh-Ray grad filters. The light you see on the rock is light from a gelled flashlight. In a few minutes we hit Whole Foods, strap the Go-Pro cameras to Jessie and drive the Las Vegas strip at dusk on the way out of town. Hope you’re all well.

  1. I always wanted to visit the Racetrack Playa. We tried to go back in 2005, but without 4-wheel drive, the rangers discouraged us from trying. It was over New Years, and the desert was wonderful! New Year’s Eve celebrations at Stovepipe Wells was something to remember! Thanks for bringing back the memories, David!

  2. I love this picture, but now I want to know if you got any other info regarding this phenomenon….elves?…the wind?…

Thanks Vere – sorry to say you’ll have to mail order them like the rest of us, but have them sent to an address in Canada, and pick them up when you arrive if possible.

  4. hey david, i love this picture like all the others too!
maybe you can tell me where to buy these singh ray filters in vancouver, because the shipping cost to austria are too expensive and i come to visit canada this summer!

  5. Reminds me of the road to Loiyangalani……N. Kenya’s version off Death Valley. Wait, wait! I see a lake, is it a mirage? Spent the night sleeping in my jeep in Valley of Fire in 1969. las Vegas was one road and a few casinos……
