Vernazza, May 2011. This is a 1920×1200 wallpaper, so it’ll do for 17?MacBook Pro and anything smaller. Click the image to access the larger file.

I almost cried “uncle” on this one and didn’t post a wallpaper, but I started feeling left out. 🙂 This was shot a week before I fell of the wall in Pisa, 40 days ago. It’s Vernazza and it’s one of my favourite places to walk around. Ah, I remember those carefree days when I could, you know, walk and stuff. 🙂  I left the hospital today and am now camped out at my family’s home south of Ottawa. I get around with either a wheelchair or by crawling which, frankly, is exhausting. Now I know why baby’s start walking, the crawling is just too friggin’ tiring. 🙂 All the way through this, the community that rallies around this blog, and twitter, has been unbelievably supportive and kind – thank you again so very much for the love.

  1. I finally downloaded the June Desktop! Sheesh…it took me this long!
In this picture…I’ve actually stood on the top of the cliff to the left…. super cool!!!!

AD – I’m envious of your time with Monet today. Thanks for the note. 🙂

  3. David: was up close and personal with some Monet canvasses today, deep in them, looking at how he drops the bright flash of red into the lily pond — and that flash of red completes the entire work. and I flashed on your comment: “what i wouldn’t give to have a man with red fez walk by….” made me smile. thanks!

  4. I am so glad to hear you are on the mend. And I this months wallpaper is absolutely stunning on my new 27″ iMac! Thank you for being you!

  5. David thank you for continuing to be such a ‘giver’ despite your circumstances. You’re a great guy and this is a gorgeous photo that I will use all day at work to “escape” to a better fantasy ; ) And hey, how about those Canucks!?!?!?!??!!!

  6. Take care David. Listen, smell and hear the little things. The days will fly by.
Hang in there. It can only get better!!

  7. go with the flow of the days and of your recovery. Hang in. I am on my first trip to Paris, carrying a camera around, looking at the tens of thousands of cameras on tourists walking around. today wondering why I bother? what can I do with my camera that is worth even pressing a button? (meaning, of the tens of thousands of images that will be recorded here today, is there any reason to add one more?) and then thought back to some of the stuff of yours I have been reading, and thought of some of the remarkable light you have captured, and which I am trying to learn to capture….thank you for all the gifts you have strewn around. thanks for gifting me with so many lessons to work on! cheers,

  8. I’m not so good at words – one reason I like photography – to say sometimes what my words don’t. I post just to let you know many eyes are watching your recovery and many hearts are with you.

  9. Crap. I typed the wrong #’s- it’s 6 screws and 2 rods. Yikes!

  10. You are too funny! 🙂 I know – I have to take advantage of this time…no laundry, although I am making lasagna next week…
I don’t know, if you released a wallpaper of your xrays I think I’d laugh. McNally’s website? Eh. He’s over rated…I’d go to RC’s website! (Just kidding about the over rated part, that’s you David! Oh, I kid, I kid!!!)
I still have to post my hardware scans – 4 screws and 3 rods…the screws are huge! I can’t believe I can’t feel them! 🙂 Although I think you have me beat on the # of screws…Hope you are settling in @ home! 🙂

But also? A wallpaper of my X-rays? Seriously? Sure, if I was looking to nauseate readers and lose them in droves to Joe McNally’s blog… 🙂 My readers are too good to me for me to abuse them like that. Let me know and I’ll send you your own copy of my crappy hardware scans. 🙂

Melissa! 4 lbs? Coffee cups! Laptops! Small cameras! But not so much that you can cook or do laundry or, really, anything considered work you don’t want to do! Girl, the world is your oyster! See you on the other side, Recovery Buddy.

  13. I agree with Stuart, where’s the xray wallpaper?!? Glad you are home and you are right – it doesn’t make it easier, just more familiar, and in some ways harder in the sense that you don’t have nurses at your beck and call! Although for me I liked the comforts that home gave me – like my own bed, my own food, and my own space! 🙂 I got a great review at the doc yesterday, but it’s still a SLOW recovery – 3 months for the bones to fuse; 3 months in this horrible brace (yes, at least I can walk…) AND I can now lift up to 4 pounds. Woo-hoo! I can now pick up my laptop! Wishing you the best! Hope to hear from you at some point soon! 🙂

  14. Thank you for the beautiful wallpaper! Wishing you continued healing as you travel the path back to full health. Thinking of you.

  15. Pleeeaase tell me you have some knee pads!! If you don’t I can drive out and bring you mine. That shot is gorgeous! Look forward to seeing more. When you get down days, remember a nursing home is more convenient, but severely more depressing. You WILL get the hang of it. One day at a time.

  16. Wonderful you can keep your sense of humour during the ordeal… and of course the baby steps along the road to recovery… be dancing soon…

  17. Vernazza is just that….magic! Thanks for sharing. Your image brought back nice visions of a visit to that special spot in Italy a few years back. Keep taking your recovery one day at a time. Best, Karen

  18. So glad to hear you have left the hospital. Keep making progress, prayers and good thoughts coming your way.

  19. Hey David! How about a race? My 10 month old is crawling. Shall we say first one to 10 consecutive steps without collapse wins? ;D

Sorry for the poor humor at your expense. Honestly I’m very happy that you are on the mend and that your fall was not worse. Heal well, and here’s to more carefree days.

    My best,
    ~Brian

  20. Look on the bright side…. wheelchairs are excellent for dolly tracking shots !!

Chin up. Hope you’re still shooting your way through this blip.

  21. Your words about “going to bed with a few tears” and Han‘s words make it really strike home… it’s so hard for anyone who is well and whole to really understand the pain and hardships of someone else’s world.

Hang in there David and continue to “get your legs under you.“ At your own pace and timing.

Hans, I live in Portland, OR, which prides itself on being very handicap friendly, but even we have a long way to go. I hope we and the rest of the world continues to do better in this respect.

  22. Lovely image David.

If it makes you feel better my little one (16mo) has just learned to walk but can we get her to walk anywhere? Hell no, crawling is so much quicker and easier! So keep practising 😉

  23. Thanks for the lovely wallpaper. I’m using them on my iPad. Exquisitely beautiful.

New phase, eh? Here’s to self-powered ambulation of the bipedal kind, when you are able. And serenity to accept the things you cannot change at the moment. Best wishes.

  24. Hey, so good to read you’re at home! I did something horrible to my ankle while living in Istanbul and spent days sliding around on a cushion until crutches were found. I remember… Meanwhile I return to my beloved Genova for 3 weeks on Saturday and will make sure I raise a glass (or two) to you and your recovery once there.

  25. Glad you are doing well. Love the blog. 5 years ago last weekend I broke my pelvis and while it doesn’t compare in severity to your injury, I understand the difficulty in finding new ways to move around and the humbling aspect of allowing others to care for you in ways that you haven’t needed since you were 2.

  26. David, keep going, you’re doing great! Look how far you’ve come already. You are my hero.

  27. Hi David, thank you for the wallpaper, wishing you a speedy recovery.

Ugo, thank you. Vernazza’s an incredible spot, isn’t it? That overlook is really wonderful. I could sit in Vernazza at dusk for days on end. Magic!

  29. I went by that same wall the day after you fell. Not knowing anything about it, I wondered if I would have been so lucky as to meet you. Maybe next time.
Speaking of Vernazza, it truly is amazing. This is my current wallpaper, shot at roughly the same hour, but from a different perspective: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ugocei/5737830157/

Getting down that steep trail in the dark is about as risky as hanging over the Arno in Pisa trying to get a picture. Ah! The things we photographers do for a picture 😉

  30. PS: David, I have successfully posted your wallpaper on my 21.5″ iMac and it looks great.

  31. Hey David, I hope you’ll get well soon my friend. I too am an Ottawa Valley boy, born Hawkesbury but lived mostly in Ottawa. I’m handicapped so can sympathize with you immensely. You soon discover that it’s a bi-ped world. Not too bad in the big city, but the smaller the town/village, the harder the life of the handicapped become. Awesome photo Dude. Hope you’ll get well soon. I live for you spectacular photography!!!!

Lynn Park – Thank you for those words. Yesterday I came home and I’m so grateful, but was it ever an overwhelming, exhausting day. I really can’t get around without crawling and it’s painful and tiring and it won’t surprise me if I go to bed with a few tears for the next few evenings as I adjust to this. I think I thought going home would make things better, it just made things more familiar. Anyways, thank you, your words mean a lot to me.

Stephen – Not a bad idea but if it’s OK with you I’ll hold off a little. This is all painful and frustrating enough without dragging a camera around. Life first, photography second.

  34. hey David why not get out a camera, you are seeing the world from a different perspective whilst you are in the chair or crawling on the floor. Injuries are bad, vision is better.

  35. David, thanks for not waffling on the wallpaper; we needs it! 🙂

I’ll pray for smooth healing and good times with your Folks. Keep on rollin’ on!

    *wheelchair wheelies FTW!

  36. I was expecting this month’s wallpaper to be an x-ray. This is better. Get back soon David!

  37. Hi David. been a while since I commented. Just a quick Hi and huge positive vibes from Australia. Go well young man.
    cheers
    pb

  38. Wow! Haven’t been tempted to replace my June 2010 wallpaper you did of Venice (even though the calendar has obviously been incorrect for about a year now) because I love it so much, but am now off to download for the switcheroo. Thanks & keep up the good fight!

  39. Dear Friends, David didn’t say anything about feeling better! He said he was at home, his parents home–and that can be when it gets really hard. I had multiple fractures in December and difficult as it was, being “on my own” again–without the structure and group support of the rehab facility–was painful in a way that’s hard to explain. So, David, if you have down days that aren’t ostensiby related to your injuries, be gentle with yourself. It’s your whole self/life that took a tumble–and that will be coming back to you. Best–Lynn, who worried she might not be able to hold a camera again. No problemo!

  40. It seems like yesterday that you, Stuart and I were taking photographs there…except we were on top of the cliff.

  41. Great to hear you’re de-institutionalized. Home is where healing begins. Would be interesting to see “the wall”.

  42. Wonderful shot. What I am curious about though is what is the last shot before the “incident”?

Glad you escaped the disease riddled institute that is usually full of misery and you’re with family now.

  43. I will be using this wall paper, both because it’s a gorgeous image, and because I want to be reminded of your awesome photography philosophies and your outlook on life! I’m currently working my way through Within the Frame, and I just bought 5 of the ebooks that will be next up in my reading! Good to hear you’re out of the hospital.

  44. Thank you and I’m glad to hear that you are on a new phase of recovery. I wish I could think of something more original to say but ‘hang in there’.

  45. Thanks for the wallpaper. It’s lovely :). Hope your injuries continue to heal quickly.

  46. Great image David. So glad to hear you’re making making plans and healing quickly. I was in Vernazza just a week or so after you -Cinque Terre is such a classic place.

  47. Author

LOL. bring it on, Eli. You post it, I’ll make sure people see it. 🙂

  48. You could just have asked to borrow my picture of “The Wall”. Hey maybe it is time to make my first desktop wallpaper…
